Mycenae

Bronze Age citadel, Lion Gate, royal tombs and legendary Agamemnon country.

Mycenae, Greece: Plan Your Visit from Nafplio

Step through the Lion Gate and into one of the most important civilizations of ancient Greece. Just around 30 minutes from Nafplio, Mycenae is one of the easiest and most rewarding archaeological excursions from the city. Once the most powerful palatial centre of Late Bronze Age Greece, Mycenae gave its name to an entire civilization and remains closely connected with the legendary world of Agamemnon and the Homeric epics. Today, Mycenae and Tiryns together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Whether you have only a morning available or want to make Mycenae part of a full day exploring Argolis, use this guide to plan your visit from Nafplio.

Mycenae at a glance

Driving time Around 30 minutes Recommended time at Mycenae 2–3 hours Don’t miss Lion Gate, Cyclopean Walls, Grave Circle A, Palace, Archaeological Museum, Treasury of Atreus UNESCO World Heritage Site Since 1999, together with Tiryns Good to know The archaeological site is open-air, with uneven and uphill terrain and limited shade Driving-distance sources place the archaeological site roughly 21–23 km from Nafplio, while a comfortable visit covering the citadel, museum and Treasury of Atreus generally takes around two to three hours. Why visit Mycenae? Mycenae is much more than another ancient site. From approximately the 16th to the 12th century BC, Mycenaean culture became one of the defining civilizations of the Bronze Age Mediterranean. Mycenae itself was its most important and wealthiest palatial centre, strategically positioned above the Argive plain. UNESCO highlights its monumental architecture, artistic achievements and influence on later Greek culture, as well as its enduring connection with the Iliad and Odyssey. What makes a visit particularly memorable is the scale. You walk through fortifications built from enormous stone blocks, enter a monumental gateway that has stood for more than three thousand years and climb through the remains of a Bronze Age citadel. The Lion Gate

The monumental entrance to the citadel is the symbol of Mycenae. Built during the 13th century BC, it takes its name from the two animals carved above the doorway and represents one of the most recognisable surviving works of Mycenaean architecture.

The Cyclopean Walls

The huge stone fortifications surrounding the citadel are one of the first things you notice when approaching Mycenae. Their blocks were so massive that later Greeks believed only the mythical Cyclopes could have built them — hence the term Cyclopean masonry.

Grave Circle A

Immediately inside the Lion Gate lies one of Mycenae's most important burial areas. Its royal shaft graves produced extraordinary finds, including gold objects discovered during the nineteenth-century excavations of Heinrich Schliemann.

The Palace

Continue uphill towards the highest part of the citadel, where the Mycenaean palace once stood. Its central megaron formed the ceremonial heart of the complex, while its elevated position offers a sense of why Mycenae occupied such an important strategic location over the Argive plain.

The Archaeological Museum of Mycenae

Do not skip the museum. Seeing the archaeological site first and then the objects recovered from Mycenae helps put the ruins into context and gives a much clearer picture of Mycenaean society, burial practices, craftsmanship and daily life.

The Treasury of Atreus

Located separately from the main citadel, the Treasury of Atreus is an impressive tholos, or beehive-shaped tomb. UNESCO specifically identifies the Treasury of Atreus, together with the Lion Gate, among the outstanding examples of monumental Mycenaean architecture. KapaTours tip: Don’t leave Mycenae immediately after visiting the citadel and museum. Make sure your itinerary also includes the Treasury of Atreus.

How to visit Mycenae from Nafplio

Mycenae is approximately 22 km from Nafplio, with the journey usually taking around half an hour by road. That makes it particularly easy to visit while using Nafplio as your base. You can travel independently by car, use local public transport where schedules suit your plans, or arrange a private tour or transfer. With a private experience, you have greater flexibility over your departure time, how long you remain at the site and whether you combine Mycenae with another destination in the Peloponnese. Check out this tour at Mycenae & Epidaurus with tickets included.

How much time do you need at Mycenae?

For most travellers, I recommend allowing around 2–3 hours for Mycenae. This gives you enough time to walk through the citadel, see the Lion Gate and palace area, visit the Archaeological Museum and stop at the Treasury of Atreus without turning the experience into a race. Because Nafplio is only around half an hour away, Mycenae also works very well as a half-day excursion from Nafplio. If archaeology is one of the main reasons for your trip, allow more time. There is much more here than the famous Lion Gate. Luckily, with our private tours, the tour schedule is built around your preferences so we can discuss if you need more time there.

Can you combine Mycenae with other places?

Yes — and this is where staying in Nafplio gives you considerable flexibility. If you have half a day: Nafplio → Mycenae → Nafplio. This is the best choice if you want to explore the site properly while keeping the rest of your day free for Nafplio. If you have a full day: Mycenae + Epidaurus. For a first visit to Argolis, this gives you two very different sides of ancient Greece: the Bronze Age citadel of Mycenae and the classical sanctuary and theatre of Epidaurus. If ancient Greece is the focus of your trip, ask us to help you build a more archaeology-focused route through the Mycenaean sites of Argolis. Tell us what you would like to see and we will help plan your route.

When is the best time to visit Mycenae?

Mycenae can be visited throughout the year, but the experience changes considerably with the season. During the warmer months, an early visit is particularly comfortable because much of the archaeological site is exposed and there is limited shade. Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and water are especially useful during summer. Outside peak summer, cooler temperatures can make exploring the citadel more relaxed. Opening hours change seasonally, so always check the latest official information before travelling. The Greek Ministry of Culture publishes current hours and admission information for the site and museum.

Before you visit Mycenae

The archaeological site includes slopes, stone surfaces and uneven terrain, so choose comfortable footwear and allow enough time to explore without rushing. The official admission currently covers the archaeological site, the Archaeological Museum of Mycenae and the Treasury of Atreus; ticket conditions and opening arrangements can change, so travellers should confirm the latest details with the Ministry of Culture before visiting. Our local recommendation

If Mycenae is your first major archaeological visit while staying in Nafplio, don’t try to squeeze too many sites into a short morning. Give Mycenae enough time to make sense of what you are seeing. The citadel, museum and Treasury of Atreus together tell a much richer story than a quick photo stop at the Lion Gate. If you have a complete day available, Mycenae can then be paired with another major destination in Argolis. And if you are unsure how much you can realistically fit into your schedule, tell us where you are staying and what interests you most. As a local tour and transfer company based in Argolis, we can help you plan a route that works in practice — not just on a map.
